Worth Asking: Supporting Someone Through Loss
How to show up for a grieving friend without needing the perfect words.
What we know
Most grieving people don't need advice or fixing — they need to feel accompanied. Showing up consistently, in small ways, tends to matter more than saying something profound.
What this may mean in everyday life
- Offer specifics: 'I'll drop off dinner Thursday,' not 'let me know if you need anything.'
- Keep checking in weeks and months later, when others have moved on.
- It's okay to say 'I don't know what to say, but I'm here.'
Questions worth asking
- Am I trying to fix their pain, or simply be with them in it?
- What small, concrete thing could I do this week to lighten their load?
